Summary:     
The Commissioning Engineer – BESS is responsible for directing and managing activities required for commissioning/start-up and warranty requirements for the utility battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities.   
Requirements:      
  • Provides input for integrated test schedules to support battery energy storage projects.
  • Manages the activities related to drafting and implementing project-specific commissioning plans and coordinates pre-commissioning activities (including factory acceptance tests).
  • Works with discipline engineers to identify and coordinate interconnection. Documentation and coordination requirements pre- and post-construction.
  • Supervises site turnover and O&M documentation.
  • Supports Warranty requests for completed project sites.
  • Manages and organizes the site commissioning manager's tasks, deliverables, and activities.
  • Management and oversight of the site commissioning personnel, ensuring construction testing and Q.A. documentation are available and assembled into the turnover document books for the client.
  • Coordinates onsite plant commissioning and performance testing.
  • Directs the field Electrical, Mechanical, Instrument/Controls, SCADA Commissioning Specialists, and Vendor representatives in the scheduling, supervision, and performance of all Commissioning, testing activities, and documentation.
  • Manages site commissioning personnel in the establishment of the Safety Tagging, Lockout & Work Permit Program and ensuring compliance with its provisions.
  • Interfaces with the Owner’s Operations Department to schedule O&M training.
  • Works with the Construction Manager or his designee to jointly develop the Punch List before the release of the system/equipment to Commissioning.
  • Attends work regularly and punctually, as scheduled or expected.
  • Complies with Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, and Company Policies & Procedures.
  • Presents, supports, and leads-by-example with a safety and quality-oriented attitude.
  • Follows safety and security procedures and determines appropriate action. Reports potentially unsafe conditions and uses materials and equipment properly.
  • Operates Company vehicle to oversee site operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:   
  • Advanced level of knowledge in:
    • Utility scale battery energy storage facility testing for EPC or Utilities in the United States
  • Intermediate level of knowledge in:
    • Underground and overhead distribution design; transmission systems and design; single and three phase electrical design.
    • DC systems architecture and testing
    • Field construction, commissioning, and startup experience preferred.
    • Knowledgeable in National Fire Protection Association/National Electrical Code (NFPA/NEC) standards, NESC, NFPA 70E and IEEE/IES/API Standards.
    • NETA and IEEE standards as related to utility scale battery energy storage facilities. EMS systems, BMS systems, Inverters, Medium Voltage Transformers, MV and LV cabling, grounding, and BESS specific component testing
    • Familiarity with NERC guidelines and various ISO and TSO organization requirements a plus
    • Familiarity with DCS / SCADA control systems and methods for utility scale Battery Energy Storage Systems
    • Familiarity with testing of mechanical and solid-state relaying systems a plus
    • Ability to interpret and integrate contract documents.
    • Ability to assist in the development and interpretation of project schedules.
    • Ability to communicate both internally and externally with both personnel and clients.
    • Ability to work extended hours and travel at short notice.
    • Ability to obtain a valid, current passport to travel outside the U.S.
    • Functional competencies include attention to detail, communication, excellence, system thinking, and business acumen.
   
Qualifications:   
   
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or 7+ years of experience in a similar position with relevant experience.
  • Certification in Project Management Training preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience managing electrical utility scale commissioning personnel and activities required.
  • Must have field construction, commissioning, and start-up experience - BESS preferred
   
Anticipated base salary range:  $85,000 - $115,000/Annually   
   
The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. This position is bonus eligible.
